The patient experience

A gummy smile can stop you from smiling the way you want to – and that can be a big setback in today’s selfie-obsessed age.

Feeling low in confidence about your outer smile can affect your inner smile, too, leaving you low in confidence and self-esteem.

If you live with a gummy smile or high, uneven or receding gums, you’ll probably know the feeling – but treatment could be much quicker and easier than you think.

Gum contouring – or a gum lift – is a fast and painless procedure using a laser or surgical techniques to resculpt uneven, high or receding gums. The gum lift is carried out under local anaesthetic, and you can usually leave the clinic within the hour with just the right amount of gum on show.

The Dental Suite offers both surgical and laser gum lifts.

Laser Gum Contouring

This procedure uses a beam of laser to recontour the gum line, leaving just the right amount of gum. The laser also seals gum pockets where bacteria collect, contributing to the onset of gum disease and tooth decay. Thanks to the speed and comfort of the procedure, as well as the short recovery time, laser gum lifts are the most popular option for getting rid of gummy smiles here at The Dental Suite.

Surgical Gum Contouring

A surgical gum lift achieves the same effect as a laser gum lift using traditional surgical techniques instead of a laser. Afterwards, the gums are sealed with sutures.

Gum Contouring Aftercare

Gum lifts can usually be carried out in under an hour, with an average treatment time of 20-30 minutes. To minimise discomfort, your dentist will administer a local anaesthetic before starting. It takes around a week for the gums to fully heal and you may experience tenderness or soreness for a few days afterwards. Your dentist can recommend over-the-counter pain relief to help manage any discomfort.

For up to a week afterwards, you may experience some mild soreness as the gums heal. Any discomfort can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief medication.
