STb braces
STb braces are a popular choice of brace system unique because they are fixed to the back of teeth. They are not revealed when you smile - ideal for individuals self-conscious about wearing braces.
How do STb braces work?
STb braces work by pulling the teeth into alignment using wires held in place with brackets on the back of the front teeth. The archwire runs adjacent to the tooth surface and the bracket sits securely on the flattest part of the tooth.
Unlike traditional metal braces, they are fixed behind teeth using brackets that are smaller, more rounded and contain a passive ligation notch system for reduced force.
What conditions are suitable for STb treatment?
If you have mild to moderate over-crowding or gaps in top or bottom set of front teeth, then STb braces are well suited. It is best to speak to an orthodontist trained in placing STb braces for a consultation.
What are the advantages of wearing STb braces?
- Small and rounded brackets ease tongue discomfort and limit disruption to speech.
- Compared to standard brackets, with STb brackets there is little disruption to biting and chewing because they are small, sit further from the tip of the tooth and don't stick out as far because they aren't very wide.
- They are not visible when smiling
- Treatment time is usually shorter than using other standard metal braces
How are the STb braces fitted?
Before fitting the brackets and wires, the orthodontist assesses the condition of the patient's teeth and gums. This may involve scans and impressions being taken. Once the patient has been identified as a suitable candidate for STb braces, the brackets and wires are developed and fitted. Over the weeks of treatment, regular appointments are required to adjust the forces exerted by the wires. Once treatment is completed, to hold teeth in place, it is advised that a retainer is worn.
