Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are made of synthetic or natural materials and can be used to repair wrinkles or scarring on the face or other parts of the body. The procedure is relatively painless and can take just half an hour.

More people than ever are demanding skin treatments to make their skin look as good as their smile, after they have had veneers, whitening or braces. At Nottingham Smiles we offer dermal fillers alongside more conventional dental treatments, in order to give patients the complete package.

There are several different types of dermal fillers available on the market, with the most popular being collagen-based. Some types of collagen dermal fillers are derived from the skin of cows, while less popular products have been made from human cells. There are some synthetic dermal fillers available, but these are not as popular and tend not to be as effective as natural products.

How do dermal fillers work?

Dermal fillers work by being pumped into sunken areas of skin where there are wrinkles or scarring, raising them to the level of the skin around them. After treatment, skin will look younger, firmer and plumper.

Before undergoing the treatment, any prospective patient will have to undergo allergy tests, so that we can determine what type of dermal filler would be best for you. Once this has been established, the patient can either return for treatment another time or go ahead with the injections right then. Anaesthetic cream will be applied twenty minutes before the injection to numb the skin, and then one of two different injection styles will be used, depending on where the area to be treated is located.

Recovery time after dermal filler injections is short, usually only 30 minutes or a few hours at most. They can be used to treat wrinkles around the mouth and other areas of the face, as well as scarring on other parts of the body and the effects can last six to nine months.
